{"id":228,"date":"2012-06-05T16:13:21","date_gmt":"2012-06-05T23:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staceetaft.com\/?p=228"},"modified":"2012-06-05T16:13:21","modified_gmt":"2012-06-05T23:13:21","slug":"really-cool-really-sad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staceetaft.net\/?p=228","title":{"rendered":"Really Cool  &#038;  Really Sad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My children pounded on our bedroom door this morning, which was highly unusual.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully I was already up\u00a0getting ready for the day.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it and was greeted by strained faces and my daughter saying,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, something happened and it was really cool and really sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t exactly sure how to react or respond to such an odd remark,<\/p>\n<p>so I simply asked her to expand on what had actually happened.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to explain that she was cozily sleeping when<\/p>\n<p>W H A M!<\/p>\n<p>there was a huge thud against her window.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently my son was already awake and went in to see what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>They then had discovered that a juvenile robin had flown into the window.<\/p>\n<p>They speculated it had rolled down the roof, attempted to fly and landed, wings spread,<\/p>\n<p>on the dewy lawn below {photo below on right}.<\/p>\n<p>Once the story had been told, we all went to see if the bird still lay on the grass.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, the poor little fella was still there sitting on the cold, wet grass with his wings spread out wide as if caught in mid-flight.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I didn\u2019t know if he was still alive or not.<\/p>\n<p>As I was admiring his beautiful plumage I noticed his eyes open, then his head turn a little.<\/p>\n<p>Still he did not move his wings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-230\" title=\"20120605_Robin2\" src=\"http:\/\/staceetaft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/20120605_Robin2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staceetaft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/20120605_Robin2.png 900w, https:\/\/staceetaft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/20120605_Robin2-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/staceetaft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/20120605_Robin2-768x369.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The kids,\u00a0in their pj&#8217;s and warm coats,<\/p>\n<p>ran to get our bird book to determine if our guess was right about it being a young robin {photo above\u00a0on left}.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, they found we were indeed correct.<\/p>\n<p>They really wanted to pet the sweet, helpless bird\u2026 obviously, I didn\u2019t allow it.<\/p>\n<p>Poor little thing was frightened enough.<\/p>\n<p>But as frightened as he might have been,<\/p>\n<p>he didn\u2019t attempt to move away from us even when my son offered him a worm\u2026<\/p>\n<p>very close to his face.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t eat the worm, but didn\u2019t flinch either.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he slightly pulled in his wings, giving us hope that he hadn\u2019t broken them.<\/p>\n<p>I had taken a few photos with my little point and shoot I keep in my purse,<\/p>\n<p>but was frustrated knowing that my full format camera was up stairs.<\/p>\n<p>So I went to get it.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as that little bird saw my giant 70-200mm f2.8 lens,<\/p>\n<p>He moved!<\/p>\n<p>Pretty fast, in fact,\u00a0for a little one who just slammed into a window; he hopped all the way over near our fence.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been told by bird experts that large camera lenses look like eyeballs to wild animals and it can really freak them out.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently, this sweet robin was no exception.<\/p>\n<p>I felt bad I had scared him, but we were delighted that he could move.<\/p>\n<p>We followed him as he hopped around the yard.<\/p>\n<p>My son decided to offer another worm, but, again, the bird didn\u2019t seem interested in it at all.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he hopped off to the corner of our yard, thick with ferns and we headed in for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>We never did see him hop or fly away, but he wasn\u2019t there when we checked after breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re hoping he recovers fully and doesn\u2019t fly into any more windows.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m thankful that the phrase \u201creally cool and really sad\u201d wasn\u2019t anything worse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re curious, the first image is with my Nikon D700 and the two images in the diptych are from my little point and shoot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My children pounded on our bedroom door this morning, which was highly unusual.
